EDC16 and EDC17 Tuning Guide basics and example by ECM Titanium software

EDC Tuning Guide:

As far as the Bosch company is the most famous and well-known amongst the others, we focus on that.
Each ECU Has some specific codes which are written on its cover that represent special definitions. A diesel engine's electronic management allows for accurate and selective adjustment of the fuel-injection parameters. A modern diesel engine can only handle all of the demands placed on it in that way.

Bosch EDC has 3 different categories:

EDC15:

Bosch EDC 15 is a fuel-based engine management system that is featured for the first time in Diesel engines. But EDC 15 consists of an ECU that analyses the information from the various Sensors and then operates the injectors at the right moment. It also controls the pressure regulator, the exhaust gas recycling electro valve, and the turbocharging pressure -modulating electro- valve.

EDC16:

Bosch EDC 16 and 17 are torque-based engine management systems featured for the first time in a diesel engine. As is the case with petrol engines, in the EDC 16 system, all torque demands are collected, evaluated, and coordinated in the engine control unit. This has the advantage of better adaptability between the individual vehicle systems (engine management, brake system, automatic gearbox, air conditioning, etc.). The new Electronic Diesel Control EDC 16 engine management system from Bosch debuted in the V10-TDI- and R5 TDI engines. Also the Bosch EDC 16 engine management system is designed to be compatible as both a single and double control unit concept. The actual concept used depends on the number of cylinders in the engine.

EDC17:

EDC17 is a new development for EURO 5 and 6 emission standards. The EDC 17 engine management system further develops the EDC 16. The difference to the EDC 16 is increased performance and a larger memory capacity. In addition, it allows control functions for future technologies to be integrated.
The Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) controls every important parameter for effective, low-emission combustion. Because the computing power and functional scope of the new EDC17 can be adapted to match particular requirements, it can be used flexibly in any vehicle segment in the global markets. In addition to controlling the precise timing and quantity of injection, exhaust gas recirculation, and manifold pressure regulation, it also offers many options, such as controlling particulate filters or systems for reducing nitrogen oxides. Moreover, the Bosch EDC17 determines the injection parameters for each cylinder and makes specific adaptations if necessary.

Are you able to remap the Bosch EDC ECUs?

The answer is obvious, “yes you can”. You can “Read & Write” the EDC ECUs by most of the programmers in the market such as:
Kess3, AutoTuner, New Trasdata Dimsport, Flex Magic-motorsport and etc.

After reading the file from the car, you have to find the tables that are related to the engine work area. It is important to know how to find the right table and select them in the right size in the hexdump, when you are using WinOLS. You have to know what is the X-Axis and Y-Axis in order to have fine remapping.
For example, This is the “Torque Request During Standard Condition” table:

As you may already know, there are two tables which are related to the Torque. One of them is this one, and the other is Torque Request During Take off Condition. You have to understand the difference between them in order to have a good remapping. Otherwise, your remapping will be Useless. You have to know how you can find their limiters in order to modify them to the requested extent.
